7075 sheet aluminum

7075 sheet aluminum:
This is a high strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. The tensile strength is typically 565MPa thus offering an outstanding strength to weight ratio for critical applications.
Work hardening alloys:
Alloys in this group harden and increase in strength as they are cold-rolled (or worked). Any one alloy, therefore, can have different strength and ductility properties depending upon how much cold-working has imposed. The degree of cold-working is denoted in the alloy designation by a suffix letter (H) and a digit from 1 to 8 indicating increasing strength.
Maximum ductility, often desirable for subsequent forming operations, is obtained by annealing a process in which the metal is heated to a temperature of around 360°C to remove the effects of any cold-working. Annealed metal is denoted by the suffix ‘O’ in the alloy designation.

6082 sheet aluminum

6082 sheet aluminum:
This medium/high strength alloy is the most popular of the heat treatable alloys. Normally supplied in the fully treated condition.

Can also be fully annealed to allow cold working to be carried out. This alloy is readily anodised, machined and welded thus providing a good multipurpose, durable and heat resistant alloy.

2014A sheet aluminum

2014A sheet aluminum:
One of the most widely used heat-treatable alloys, it offers a high strength with excellent machinability. It is widely used in highly stressed aircraft applications where strength to weight ratio is critical. The alloy has only fair corrosion resistance and so is frequently specified with a pure aluminum cladding. It does not respond well to MIG and TIG welding.

Sheet aluminum is defined as cold-rolled material

Sheet aluminum is defined as cold-rolled material over 0.2mm thick but not exceeding 6mm thick.
Alloy Selection Guide:
The wide range of alloys available can be broadly split into two groups, the work hardening alloys and the heat treatable alloys. It is important to advise your supplier if you intend to spin, draw or anodise the product.

Heat-treatable Alloys:
The strongest of the aluminum alloys are those that gain strength by special heat-treatment process. The alloys are identified by the suffix ‘T’ plus the addition of digits denoting variation of heat-treatment.

6061 aluminum sheet

Alloy 6061 aluminum sheets are one of the most versatile and widely used of the heat treatable alloys. This wrought tooling sheet exhibits excellent machinability, weldability, and medium strength. Though less strong then most of the 2xxx and 7xxx alloys, 6061 is typically selected where welding or brazing is required or for its high corrosion resistance in all tempers. It has exceptional joining characteristics, good acceptance to anodizing and is easily cold worked and formed in the annealed condition.

From plate to sheet and aluminum foil

The production of sheet aluminum or foil usually starts out the same way as plate but the slab is further rolled through a continuous mill to reduce thickness and wound into a coil at the end of the line. These coils are subsequently cold rolled, from one to several passes at cold rolling mills. Coils may be heated in a furnace to soften it for further cold rolling or produce the desired mechanical properties. Cold rolling is the last step for some sheet, but other types (referred to as heat-treatable) are subjected to further elevated-temperature processing to increase their strength. Some sheet and foil products may also be produced using the continuous casting process in which molten metal enters the caster, which produces a hot rolled coil, thus bypassing the ingot casting and hot rolling steps.

Producing aluminum sheet

Rolling begins with preheated sheet ingots that can weigh more than 20 tons. As the size of rolling mills has increased, so has the size of these ingots, but a typical ingot is approximately 6 feet wide, 20 feet long and more than 2 feet thick. The ingot is first heated to rolling temperature and fed into a breakdown mill, where it is rolled back and forth until the thickness has been reduced to just a few inches. The slab can be subsequently cold rolled or may be heat-treated to increase its strength. The highest strength alloys are heat treated and rapidly cooled to room temperature, after which they are stretched to straighten and relieve internal stress built up during rolling and heat-treating. They are aged naturally at room temperature or artificially aged in a furnace to develop the desired combination of strength and corrosion resistance. Finally, the plate is trimmed to final size. Plates produced in this manner may be used at full thickness, but are often machined into a variety of simple to complex shapes.
